Frequently Asked Questions

What is contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is a type of skin rash that develops when the skin comes into contact with certain substances. It is caused by an allergic reaction or irritation from direct contact with certain materials, such as fabrics, soaps, detergents, and cosmetics.

What are the causes of contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis can be caused by allergens or irritants that come in contact with the skin. Common allergens include metals such as nickel, fragrances, preservatives, dyes, topical medications, and rubber chemicals to name. a few. These substances may be found in products you use every day which makes identifying them very challenging.

What are the symptoms of contact dermatitis?

The primary symptom of contact dermatitis is a red, itchy rash on the area where contact was made. Other symptoms can include irritation, burning, stinging, or swelling of the skin. In severe cases, blisters and swollen lymph nodes may also appear.

How is contact dermatitis diagnosed?

Contact dermatitis is usually diagnosed based on your medical history, a physical examination of the skin, and patch testing. Patch testing involves applying small amounts of potential allergens to patches that are then placed on your skin for several days. A positive result is identified by redness or irritation at the site of an allergen after the patches have been removed. Typically, you will receive information on how to best avoid that allergen once it has been identified as the culprit.

How is contact dermatitis treated?

Treatment for contact dermatitis typically involves avoiding contact with the irritant or allergen. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe topical creams or ointments to help reduce inflammation, itching, and discomfort. Oral medications may also be prescribed in more severe cases to reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms. It is important to see a healthcare provider if contact dermatitis does not improve with home treatment.
